Are You Using Way More Data Than You Need?

We live in times that are dominated by smartphones and data, and there is a general perception that when you buy a new smartphone, you need to get more data with it too.  For some, it’s just like buying a car – you get a new car, and your fuel needs go up. While we often speak of saving fuel, how about saving data? After all, we spend so much unnecessary money on it, and incurring high costs month after month is not easy. In certain cases, getting an unlimited plan is better than paying overhead costs every now and then.

So what is the solution? The easiest and the most important step is to assess the data you use. Consider what you use your phone the most for. It could be that you need more data because you use YouTube or video streaming apps all the time. Some would just be using it for social media or email, and their data needs would be much lower.

Video streaming, music streaming, and playing podcasts use much more data than other apps. It’s not like the other apps don’t use data, but these drain your data real quick.

Are there ways to limit data usage? Certainly. The best thing you can do is to stay connected to Wi-Fi as much as possible. If possible, try to have access to Wi-Fi both at home and office.

There are some more tips that can help you save on data – first, make sure to back up photos to Google Photos or iCloud, only when your phone is on Wi-Fi. Second,  be mindful of downloading audiobooks and videos to your phone, only when you are connected to Wi-Fi. This helps in blowing up unnecessary data. Another very important thing, is to check your phone’s settings to see which apps use the most cellular data and delete the ones you don’t use at all.

Also, if you are watching videos, it’s best to watch them in Standard Definition, instead of HD or 4K. And lastly, remember to turn off video autoplay on apps like Facebook or Instagram.
