Get Referrals
Looking through the Internet or browsing a phone book for moving companies can be overwhelming. Ask friends, family members, and coworkers if they have a moving company they could recommend. If working with a real estate agent, ask them for a referral.
The Rule of Threes
Instead of settling for the first estimate you receive, ask at least three different companies to give you an estimate, since no company can really give you a thorough estimate without seeing your things.
Look for Red Flags
Look out for any red flags during your estimate. Most moving companies shouldn’t ask for a cash deposit before you move and if the mover seems eager to get the money, it might not be a legitimate business. During the estimate, how professional or unprofessional do the movers seem? If they’re late or can’t answer your questions, look for another company. Be careful of any movers who show up in a rented moving van.
Licensed and Insured Movers
The U.S. Department of Transportation issues a U.S. DOT number to licensed movers moving interstate. If you are moving out of state, verify the moving company’s license through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website and request the company’s U.S. DOT number; you will definitely need it if you have to file a claim against the company later on. If you’re staying within the state, check with your local consumer affairs agency.
The Better Business Bureau
Research your moving company’s track record with the BBB, which you can easily do for free online. Stick to moving companies that are BBB accredited or at least have a good rating from past consumers. If your chosen moving company isn’t listed with the BBB, consider looking for one that is listed.
Enquire About Professional Accreditation
Trade associations always vet companies before giving them a membership or approved seal. Look for a moving company that carries the American Moving and Storage Association’s ProMover logo. You can also look for approved companies directly from the American Moving and Storage Association’s Moving.org site.
Verify the Address
Always ask for a business card of theirs or pull up the mover’s website and then look up the listed address online or through a phonebook. Make sure that the moving company’s address is listed and registered under the company’s own names. Be wary of any address that is listed under a residential name.
