A home security system is a gadget that works together to protect your home. Often it consists of the following objects:
Security Camera:
Security cameras can hook up to Wi-Fi so that you can live-stream footage remotely as well as receive a notification whenever the camera detects movement, people, packages, and more.
Motion Sensor:
Motion sensors placed in a main entryway or hallway on the ground floor of a home can detect motion and alert you if your system is armed. Some sensors are also sensitive to pets so they won’t go off when your dog walks by.
Entry Sensor:
Entry sensors are attached to doors and windows to detect when they have been opened or closed. The sensor has two parts, one that goes on the window or door itself, and one that goes on the frame.
Glass Break Sensor:
Sometimes, intruders will simply break windows to avoid setting off the entry sensors. A glass break sensor, however, will also detect the sound of glass breaking.
Siren:
Sirens in home security systems exist both on their own and built into other devices. They’ll go off with your alarms to scare the intruder away or alert your neighbors.
Yard Signs and Window Stickers:
Many security systems also give you a yard sign or window stickers. Burglars will often leave if they see that there’s a security system, so they’re good to have.
Smoke and CO detectors:
Your home should always have a smoke and carbon monoxide detector to ensure that your air quality is safe.
How They Work
The components on security systems vary wildly from system to system, consisting of just sensors for some, and all of the many components and more for others. For the majority of systems, all of the components connect to the base station and then to a mobile application, allowing you to monitor and control everything remotely. Most systems use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to connect to your phone, and some even have cellular, landline, or battery backup in case of a power outage. When your system is disarmed, none of the sensors go off and your camera stops recording when it detects motion or people, depending on its intelligence capabilities.
If your system is armed, the sensors turn on and the camera starts recording. You can use a mobile application to live-stream footage from your security camera, receive notifications, and more. A smart home security system lets you see what’s going on at home, no matter where you are.
