A few grey hairs aren’t reason enough to put away your traveling shoes. Seniors can travel the world and adventure with the best of them but you do have to tweak the way you do it. Stay safe with these five travel tips for sixty-plus jet-setters.
Always Get Travel Insurance
The older you are, the higher your risk of injury, emergency illness, or running out of medication due to a delayed flight or interrupted travel schedule. Travel insurance covers you in most unexpected situations and it only costs about $200.
Don’t Call Attention to Yourself or an Empty Room
Seniors are often targeted by thieves and pickpockets so be sure to be extra careful at your hotel. Instead of hanging the “clean my room” sign on your room door, call the front desk and let them know that they can send someone up to clean the room. Keep the security chain on your door when you are inside the room. Rooms near the elevator are the safest since thieves are unlikely to linger in places with high foot traffic. When you’re out sightseeing, avoid wearing expensive jewelry and keep your cash in a fanny pack around your waist.
Be Cautious With New Foods
You don’t want to risk food poisoning or even an upset stomach no matter how tempting it is to try that spicy curry or wrap. As you get older, your stomach is more likely to revolt against food it’s not used to. A stomach bug could trigger all sorts of other health complications and completely ruin your trip. Allow yourself an occasional taste, but for the most part go easy on heavy, spicy, or cheesy foods.
Be Vigilant About Medication
Always pack your medication and medical equipment in your hand luggage so that it’s with you at all times. Pack more than you think you need and make sure you don’t leave it in a hotel room or a bus.
Wear Comfortable Footwear
You’re going to walk a lot and your feet will thank you at the end of a long day seeing the sights. Flat shoes will also help you stay steady on your feet and reduce the risk of a fall or sprained ankle.
