Understanding If Common Home Remedies for Psoriasis Actually Work

When it comes to psoriasis, every case is unique. While there is no single method for treating the disease effectively, you might find a combination of medication and some home remedies that can help you manage your disease better.

Here are some promising home remedies that provide some relief when you’re facing off with a flare-up.

Aloe Vera – The National Psoriasis Foundation doesn’t recommend trying the oral tablet form of aloe vera. Though research shows that applying aloe vera extract cream with a 0.5 percent strength results in significant clearing of psoriatic plaques and reduces scaling, itching, redness, and inflammation.

Turmeric – While there aren’t any clinical tests to show the benefits of Turmeric as a treatment, using a topical turmeric gel twice daily for about nine weeks has shown encouraging results. It helps with improving the size, redness, thickness, and scaling of their psoriasis lesions.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids –  Inflammation is the cause of itchy, red flakes. Though Omega-3 fatty acids can help decrease inflammation and help deal with symptoms of psoriasis. Usually found in foods like seeds, nuts, soy, flaxseed oil, and fatty fish there are also a number of fish oil supplements you can try after checking with your doctor. Coupled with a low-fat diet, many people have seen moderate to great improvement in their condition.

Salt Baths – A warm (not hot) bath with Epsom salt, mineral oil, colloidal oatmeal, or olive oil can be very soothing for people with psoriasis. Besides reducing the itching and irritation, mineral-rich bath salts like those from the Dead Sea can be particularly beneficial.

Stress Relief – Stress is one of the biggest known triggers for psoriasis flare-ups. Using yoga, aromatherapy. meditation, deep breathing exercises, and keeping a journal can all help you reduce pain and manage your symptoms better.

Humidifiers – Humidifiers add moisture to the air thereby helping to prevent drying out of sensitive skin. Research suggests a humidity level that sits between 30 and 50 percent provides the most benefits.

While simple home remedies can never replace medical care, many of these remedies show consistently strong evidence of being able to help with psoriasis. We still strongly recommend checking with your doctor before making any changes.
